What is an ebook?

'eBook' is short for 'electronic book', a digital version of a print book that offers the convenience, access, and unique capabilities of the digital realm. eBooks are available in a variety of formats, and Author is pleased to offer ebooks for Adobe Reader 6.0, Microsoft Reader, and Mobipocket Reader. eBook readers are available as free downloads.

What software do I need to have in order to purchase and read ebooks?

To purchase and read ebooks, you need to have special ebook-reading software. There are a few formats of ebooks, and in order to purchase and read a specific format of ebook, you must have the proper software installed.

Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks require either Adobe Reader 6.0 (for PCs and Macs) or Adobe Reader 3.0 (for the Palm OS). The file extension for Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks is '.pdf'.

Microsoft Reader is available for desktop and laptop computers, Tablet PCs and Pocket PCs. The file extension for Microsoft Reader ebooks is '.lit'.

Mobipocket Reader is available for desktop and laptop computers with Microsoft Windows operating systems, SmartPhones, and Pocket PC and Palm OS PDAs.

How do I purchase an ebook?
After browsing Author eBookstore and finding an ebook to purchase, click on the 'buy' link to add the ebook to your Shopping Cart. After checkout, you will be directed to a download page where you can click on the 'Download' button to download your purchased ebook to your computer.

How do I get to my ebooks after I've downloaded them?
Adobe Reader 6.0 automatically saves a copy of the downloaded ebook to your computer. Within Adobe Reader 6.0, select 'My Bookshelf' from the 'File' menu to view the ebooks currently saved on your computer. Microsoft Reader automatically saves a copy of the downloaded ebook to your computer. Within Microsoft Reader, select the 'Library' button to view the ebooks currently saved on your computer. Mobipocket Reader requires you to save the eBook to your computer. To open a Mobipocket eBook, open Mobipocket Reader and select File > Open, then browse to the desired file. Alternatively, open Mobipocket Reader and select File > My Library to display a list of previously downloaded titles within the Mobipocket Reader interface. If you've deleted an ebook from your computer, you can return to Author eBookstore and click on the 'My Bookshelf' link. Your previously purchased ebooks will be available here for re-download. (Please note that for Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks, you'll need to contact Customer Support to have your download links re-activated for more than one download).

Can I save ebooks to a portable storage device and move them from one machine to another?
Adobe Reader 6.0 ebooks cannot be moved from machine to machine, as the security of the file is tied to the machine on which the ebook is downloaded. Premium Microsoft Reader ebooks may be moved from machine to machine, as long as each machine has a copy of Microsoft Reader that is activated to the same Passport account as the machine used to download the ebook. All other Microsoft Reader ebooks may be moved from machine to machine. Mobipocket eBooks can be used on multiple machines. Note that you need to install Mobipocket Reader on any machine on which you intend to read a Mobipocket eBook, and that you will have to register a Mobipocket PID for each machine on which you intend to read a Mobipocket eBook before attempting to download.
